2011 InterVin Judges’ Selections for Best Value

Thirty-three wines received the Judges’ Award for Best Value at the 2011 InterVin International Wine Awards, an intensive three-day competition conducted last month at White Oaks Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The value citation was bestowed on wines receiving high scores from InterVin judges — ranking as silver or gold medal winners — and retail for $15 or less. The 33 selections, including four that are priced at $10 or under per bottle, hail from all corners of the globe, including strong representation from Australia, Canada and Italy.

“Whether they are casual consumers or collectors, wine lovers want to know about wines that offer exceptional character and excellent value,” says Christopher Waters, editor of VINES Magazine and head judge of the InterVin International Wine Awards. “With a record number of selections, this year’s Best Value award winners are bound to attract attention.”

Internationally acclaimed sommeliers Lorie O’Sullivan and Zoltan Szabo, respected wine critics Jamie Drummond and Daenna Van Mulligen and celebrated winemakers Craig McDonald and Paul Pender were part of a 16-member judging panel that tasted through more than 1,000 submissions during the competition.

InterVin is a collaboration between VINES Magazine, Canada’s most influential wine magazine, and the producers of the annual Gourmet Food & Wine Expo in Toronto and the Niagara Food & Wine Expo. Competing wines were grouped by varietal or style to ensure each was fairly evaluated alongside its international peers.

Award winners will be featured in a special edition of VINES Magazine, which will be launched in late October. They will also be included in a special report in The National Post in November. Full results will be available online at intervin.ca.
